When men and women lose hair, the cells on the scalp die and the follicles will not re-grow new hair. However, scientists have observed that the follicle is only lying dormant and still has the potential of new hair growth. Injecting stem cells from the body into the dead and dying cells starts a process where new tissue is generated which stimulates the follicle to grow hair again.

In 2003, a group of researchers at Harvard Medical School isolated the cells that stimulate hair growth in the follicle. In 2004, scientists in Pennsylvania injected stem cells into mice and hair growth in the mice was triggered. In research after that, tests on small groups of volunteers showed that hair growth in the follicles happened to 70% of the volunteers. However, it still is not known just how long a hair growth stimulated by stem cells will survive. There is some discussion in the scientific world that expansion of the skull causes some hair to quit growing, so it is not known how this skull expansion would affect new hair growth. Other factors, such as the genetic disposition for baldness, are issues that will have to be researched to see if stem cell therapy could help.

The process of extracting stem cells from the body involves drawing blood, then separating the blood into what is called Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP. PRP is where stem cells are located. A sample tissue is taken from the area that is being treated and the tissue is then injected with stem cells in the laboratory. If the tissue shows new growth in the lab, it is injected back into the body to see if it will stimulate good cell growth to replace injured or diseased cells.

Stem cell therapy is a new idea for many. Only in recent years have we heard of stem cells and of the controversy surrounding them. The harvesting of stem cells from umbilical cords and embryos is still highly controversial. Cell therapy is still in the experimental stage and may not be available to the general public for many more years. When it is available, the cost likely will be prohibitive for most people. As time goes on, however, stem cell therapy may be the accepted form of treatment for all diseases and disorders, including hair loss.
